The Reviews for Mark of the Devil (1970) 1080p

Hardcore horror with too many nasty scenes for its own goodReviewed bybarnabyrudgeVote: 7/10

Mark of the Devil achieved a certain degree of notoriety in Britain when it was banned for two and a half decades. Now that the film is readily available, it's a bit embarrassing to see what the censors consider inappropriate viewing because the film is nowhere near as repellent as its reputation suggests. It is, however, sufficiently nasty to be an unpleasant experience.

The story is actually quite well worked out, with witch hunter Lom travelling around the Alps sentencing people for crimes of witchcraft. One of his young followers (Udo Kier) has rescued a girl from witchcraft charges, but Lom decides to punish her anyway, thus trigerring off a feud between the pupil and his master which ends with considerable carnage.

The film plays like a particularly bloodthirsty Hammer horror, with slightly more graphic scens of torture and violence. It's a shock to find Lom in this kind of film, having sealed his reputation in The Pink Panther films, but he turns in the best performance, giving a chilling and convincing turn as a truly despicable man. Not for all tastes, then, but possibly of interest to fans of banned horror movies.

A different age, thank God.Reviewed byRatedVforVinnyVote: 8/10

Whilst 'the Witchfinder General' is considered the mother of all witchfinder movies, 'Mark of the Devil' is a horrid side/companion piece. States around 8 million folk were tried and convicted as witches, from the 15th to the 19 century. the 'Mark of the Devil', really goes for it! A Jacobean, demented effort, that over a period of time has gained a very healthy cult following. The excellent cast includes the stern looking Herbot Lom, the enigmatic Udo kier and a really nasty turn by Reggie Nalder (as the mad witch-hunter 'Albino'). Popcorn at the ready, haha.
