The Reviews for Uncertainty (2009) 1080p

Two, two, two flics in oneReviewed byNozzVote: 8/10

Seinfeld's George Costanza, in a rare fortunate moment, had a line that went something like "I'm doing what I like, and I'm good at it, and I'm getting paid for it. It doesn't get any better than this." Joseph Gordon-Levitt seems to be living that moment. Well, maybe he's not getting paid the big millions yet, but he has his grubstake and he gets to choose his movies, and he knows how to choose good ones, and he's good in them. He's a lucky guy, and long may his luck last.

The problem with your ordinary action movie is that there's no time spent developing characters, and the trouble with your average character-portrait movie is that not much happens. So before the character movie can get boring, let's switch to some action, and while the suspense is high, we can afford to switch back to the character portraits. Terrific idea. The hero is pulling his pretty girl sidekick along through his narrow escapes, but this time she's not just another pretty girl sidekick, she has a whole family full of love and concern and sorrow that gives the movie depth and heart. Unfortunately, the rationale behind the switching back and forth is not presented clearly enough.

Great performances; the plot has shortcomings thoughReviewed byBeneCumbVote: 7/10

The launch is interesting and provides opportunities for a sophisticated course of action, but it becomes confusing and inscrutable instead as there is no interconnection between the couples. Two separate movies or use of twins having something in common (=interweaving events) could have been more catchy to follow. Here, the main motive is fully revealed in the very end only and, together with the credits, you realize that you have watched 2-in-1 movie with just the characters quite similar - and the solutions are trivial and half-way. In the action part, no family is shown, and vice versa - probably deliberately.

The cast is, however, great, with leading roles performed by Lynn Collins as Kate and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Bobby. They are both pleasant and versatile actors and movies with their presence are at least watchable, if not more. Uncertainty is not among the strongest they are in, but 1 hour 35 minutes do not let the characters become boring; admirers of Collins and Gordon-Levitt will not be disappointed.

I really liked this film. Joseph-Gordon Levitt's choices in films are almost always stellar ("Stop-Loss" ruins his 'street-cred'). This film assures us that he has not lost his ability to find solid scripts and amazing directors.

The reason why this film is so interesting is because of its structure. To help make a decision, a couple flips a coin, then two stories progress simultaneously. Each story shows us the outcome of a different coin-toss result. One story is a mystery/action film and the other shows us how the two characters interact in a dysfunctional family BBQ. Beautifully shot and performed. The film masterfully uses the coin-flip device and avoids being gimmicky ? kudos!
