"When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are, anythingyour heart desires will come to you." That's the chorus from a song inWalt Disney's 1940 animated classic "Pinocchio" – and the song went onto become the de facto anthem of the Walt Disney Company. But 2017'sfantasy horror thriller "Wish Upon" (PG-13, 1:31) sure ain't Disney.Throughout history, in literature, folklore and real life, people havemade wishes by throwing money in a well, blowing dandelion seeds intothe wind, blowing out candles on a birthday cake and whispering theirgreatest desires to the heavens. Those wishes are usually for goodthings and, if a wish seems to have come true, it usually means goodthings have happened. But along with the universal human habit ofwishing, comes the proverbial admonition to be careful what you wishfor. Sometimes a wish granted can create unforeseen problems that thewisher then wishes he or she could just wish away. The advertising for"Wish Upon" carries a reminder of that traditional warning and themovie makes the point that, whether you're wishing on a star or amysterious wooden box, the seemingly innocuous act of making a wish, can make you wish you hadn't.

Clare Shannon (Joey King) is a typical teenager with typical wishes. She's awkward and wishes she weren't. She has a crush on a classmate(Mitchell Slaggert) who doesn't notice her and she wishes he would. Shedoesn't have much money and she wishes she did. Her father embarrassesher and she wishes he didn't. And she has even more serious problems(like the memory of seeing her mother hang herself years earlier),problems she'd love to be able to wish away, but can't. Or can she? When Clare's father, Jonathan (Ryan Phillippe), who seems to make hisliving by salvaging what other people throw away (think, a modern day"Sanford and Son"), brings her home a wooden box with Chinese writingon it, Clare just may have the solution to all her problems sittingright on her bed. Then again, maybe not.

Clare is learning Chinese in school and, while she can't read all thewriting on the box, she can make out something about the box grantingseven wishes. Not really believing that the box's promise is real, butreally wishing it were, she touches it and makes a hypothetical wishthat a school bully "would just go rot". When Clare's tormentorsuddenly comes down with a flesh-eating infection, Clare is amazed atthe "coincidence". She doesn't necessarily believe that her wish wasresponsible or that the box caused her classmate's unusual illness, butshe makes some more wishes… you know… just in case. What Claredefinitely doesn't yet fathom is that a series of freak accidents andtragic deaths in her town are somehow connected to her wishes. Tounderstand that means being able to read the rest of the writing on thebox and learning about its mysterious origins, things that herclassmate, Ki Hong Lee (Ryan Hui) can help her out with. But even whenshe understands what's happening and why, she has to decide whether tolisten to her best friends Sydney and Shannon (Meredith McNeil and JuneAcosta) who tell her to get rid of the box, or heed the ominous warningthe box has for those who take such an action.

"Wish Upon" is one of the best thrillers of mid 2017. Sure, it'sunrealistic, but show me a thriller that isn't. And, yes, it's kind ofsimplistic, but therein lies its appeal. Screenwriter Barbara Marshall("Viral", TV's "Terra Nova") creates a solid mythology to under-girdthe film's premise and does a great job of connecting the dots of hervarious plot points, while staying within the limits she establishesfor her story. Director John R. Leonetti ("Annabelle", "The ButterflyEffect 2") keeps the script real (regarding the behavior of an ordinaryteenage girl caught up in some extraordinary circumstances), buildstension at key moments and gives us some disturbing and bloodyfulfillment of the box's warnings, while not relying on an unnecessaryamount of gore. The acting is even pretty good for a horror movie, especially from the film's central character, played by rising youngstar Joey King. This movie combines typical teenage dreams with thenightmare of the "Final Destination" films and what Movie Fans get isone creepy, scary and brain-teasing good time which brings home thewarning in the film's tagline. "A-"

Fans of Final destination will definitely enjoy this. Genuine tension but lacks originality.Reviewed byFella_shibbyVote: 8/10

Saw this recently on a DVD. Agree its not scary or original but it is a decent entertainment with good kills n sufficient tension. Wasn't aware that it is directed by the director of Annabelle. Saw the trailer n got interested. It has some Final Destination suspense built up for their deaths. Anticipation of the death scenes were full of suspense n tension. The production values were good, acting n direction good n it was nice to see Ryan Phillippe back in an unkempt beard. The plot may sound familiar to The Craft n Wishmaster. It is about a teen who gets hold of a box which can grant wishes but at the cost of deaths. The film succeeded in creating good tension, u will be guessing who will be sacrificed for the wishes.

I wish I may, I wish I might, make a demand that might cost someone'slife? That's not the way the rhyme goes, but this parody is prettyrepresentative of the theme of my latest review. Robbie K here, thistime covering Wish Upon the latest horror genre flick to flood thesilver screens across the country. The "disturbing" trailers paint thepicture of the next spine tingling film, but the PG-13 rating suggestsit could be a little timid. What's the verdict? Hopefully I can fill insome answers to help answer that question. Let's get started!

Shorter Run Time: I know what you're thinking, not good if this is alike, but it's nice to see a movie stick around the 90-minute run timewhen there isn't sustenance to keep it running longer. Wish Upon fillsits short run-time purpose with the thrills you want, and keeps itconcise, a sign of good directing and editing in an era what that sosuffers.

Joey King: Singling out the actors in this rather new actor cast, JoeyKing reprises her horror acting in a "two thumbs up" manner. King playsthe role of a distressed teenager with class, bringing a delicatebalance of drama, screaming, and shallow happiness to the character. Inmany PG-13 or teenager focused films, the lead character often suffersfrom overacting or extreme tangents in directing. For me, King was ableto keep things in good proportions and didn't have me rolling my eyes(a first in a long time.) While certainly not an award-winningperformance, King gets props for carrying the load of the movie.

A Nice tangent: Despite the common trend of demons, spirits, andghosts… Wish Upon at least brings a slight twist to the themes ofhorror movies. The wishing factor is a nice gimmick to get sold ontoand see what desires will tempt her to risk lives. It set a nice pacefor the movie to build upon, and made it a little dynamic in regards towhom would pay the blood price for Clare's (King) decisions andselfishness. The wish factor also presented some character development, shallower but existing, that really worked in their favor.

Not overly graphic: A PG-13 horror movie is often a lot lax in theirgrim depictions of death. Wish Upon continues that trend, forgoinggross, exaggerated, drawn out torturous deaths in favor of ridiculous, and still horrible, deaths that are quickly executed. One can think ofthis as Final Destination meets Unfriended, which boils down tocoincidental deaths with a filter. Unfortunately, it means you haveseen a majority of the executions via the commercials, but you will geta few sequences that have escaped the public eye up until now.

Very simplistic: Despite the deaths being filtered and less intense, they were also very simplistic and not as impressive. Yes, they werestill awful (as death is), but the hype up of the trailers was sadlydropped with the simplicity of the deaths. There was no extra edgefactor to them, and the lack of suspense, which left the ridiculousnature of the deaths the eye-rolling component of the film. If you wantthe mindless, over the top deaths without the blood… well your wish hasbeen granted I guess. Story: Wish Upon's tale has some decent characterdevelopment in it to highlight the underlying theme of the horrormovie. It was great seeing Clare's transitions and her attempt to findthe solution to the curse kept in the box. However, outside of that, the story tanks. It's the same predictable mess that most of this genreis, with little sustenance so that they could cram more deaths into themovie. The cool wish concept brought about a lot of potential tointeract with the entity, as well as opportunities for a moresuspenseful uncovering of the source of the evil. I would have liked tosee what the creature looked like, or at least more interaction withthe invisible evil that dwelled within. Other plot elements could havebeen a little more detailed in the delivery as well, to add theemotional impact I think they wanted.

Wish Upon isn't the worst movie to grace the theaters. This PG-13 moviebrings a unique angle to a stale concept that is concise, decentlyacted, and not overly graphic. Unfortunately, the execution is still inneed of work on a variety of areas. A lackluster story that wasunderdeveloped and the lack of suspense are two key areas the potentialsequel can bring to the table. As for this film though, if you aren'tlooking for a filtered death movie, you might skip this until hauntsNetflix. For those looking for a simplistic horror film though… you'vegot a ringer in the theaters this summer. One thing is certainthough…be careful what you wish for.
